How Hail Damage Insurance Claims Work in Iowa

A plain-English walkthrough of filing a hail damage roof claim in Iowa.

Hailstorms roll through the Quad Cities every year, and every year homeowners ask us the same questions. When should I file. How much is this going to cost me out of pocket. Will my rates go up.

Start with a free estimate. A qualified roofer should climb the roof, chalk the impact points, and give you a photo report. If the density of impacts on a test square supports a claim, you have documentation.

Call your carrier and open a claim. The carrier will send an adjuster, usually within a week or two. Ask your roofer to be there. When the roofer and the adjuster walk the roof together and agree on scope on the ground, the paperwork moves faster.

You will receive an actual cash value check first, and a depreciation release check after the work is complete and invoiced. Your out of pocket is your deductible. It is illegal for a contractor in Iowa to rebate your deductible, and any contractor who offers to is a red flag.
